About the Courses Taught

I have been teaching Art Appreciation for six years now. It is sectioned into four areas of discussion regarding art. The first section is four chapters on design elements and principles. In my face-to-face classes we do a collaged art project based on the work of Romare and then do a class critique. I do this do get the students to think about the evaluation and analysis of art.

After this section the students begin the next section of the book based on the media of art. The students are taken on a field trip to a gallery, and then assigned an essay paper doing an analysis of an artwork based on a medium they like. Two art assignments are done based on the media of art, for example: print-making (using stencil).

The next section is the cultures of art. It surveys art around the world with many examples of artwork done from these cultures. The final two art projects are based on cultural motifs.

The last section is on Modernism and Post-Modernism. The last essay paper is based on the direction in which art is being taken, based on several aspects we discuss in class.

I also have taught foundation courses: Drawing I & II and Painting I & II.  In both classes are short lectures regarding the medium of each one, styles, a bit of history.  Then Technique is demonstrated and the students are assigned their work. Grading is based on the use of the technique, application of lecture material, and their own personal style development.

In the aforementioned courses, the goal is to teach the students compositional elements [as they apply to the medium taught], basic color theory [painting and Drawing II], and technique.  The second semester students in both drawing and painting receive some exposure to modern artists and concepts.
